Summer Bucket List

There are some things that aren’t listed with the usual tourist attractions, but they are experiences that cost little and are made memorable with the addition of family, a desire to explore, and a bit of local knowledge.

Here are our ideas for places to make memories…

Flying a kite on Pentire Headland

The sun on your face, the sound of the sea, and with any luck plenty of wind in your kite!

Pootle on down to the end of our road and you’ll come to the headland with some of the best views in Cornwall. And as luck would have it, this place provides an ideal spot for kite flying.

Be careful on very windy days though – it can get strong here!

Watching the sunset at Holywell Bay

Pack a picnic, don’t forget the strawberries and cream, and head to Holywell Bay, just down the coast. Even at high tide there is enough beach to play with on the main stretch and the dunes behind are a great for a pre-picnic run around.

This beach is a super spot for watching the sun go down. If you’re lucky - given the right time of year and the right angle - the sun will be framed by the huge rocks just off-shore known as Gull Rocks and Carter’s Rocks.

Paddling in the River Gannel

The Gannel Estuary is a very wide stretch of clear blue water with inlets, creeks and beaches. Popular with stand-up paddle boarders and canoers, this is also a brilliant river for good old fashioned paddling.

Crantock Beach is a nice easy option, or head upstream to find a tucked-away bit of river for splashing around.

It’s a tidal river, so be careful where you go when – check out www.tidetimes.org.uk/newquay-tide-times#axzz39oFWZL9u for tide times.

Exploring the sand dunes on Crantock Beach

The dunes behind the beach at Crantock (voted Best Beach by the Radio Times no less!) are an explorer’s playground! Great for little nippers but also a place for big kids to reminisce about running, jumping, tumbling, hide and seek…

In peak season you can stock up on well-earned ice-creams from the beach kiosk.

Happy exploring!
