Newquay is, unarguably, the coolest of all the Cornish towns. Voted the best family holiday destination by readers of ‘COAST’ magazine, the seaside resort is famed for its laid-back vibe, clean waves and seven miles of sandy beaches – perfect for building sandcastles, exploring rockpools, hitting the surf and heading out on bracing winter strolls.
Newquay town centre has a good mix of independent boutiques for you to discover – from galleries to shabby-chic vintage homeware as well as some classic beachy goodies. Many major villages, towns and attractions are also within an hour's drive – from the famous foodie town of Padstow to the north, to the super chic St. Ives to the south – Newquay is a brilliant base from which to explore Cornwall.
As the surf centre of Europe, there’s always something going on in Newquay. If you’re interested in catching some waves, Fistral Beach is the undisputed epicentre of the UK’s surfing culture…and when you stay at The Esplanade Hotel it’s right on your doorstep; choose one of our sea view rooms to drink in the views from the moment you awake.
If water sports float your boat you’ve come to the right place - you’ll LOVE the selection of adventure centres available! We highly recommend the Quiksilver Surf School which can be accessed from the Esplanade; their pro team offer surfing lessons, coasteering and equipment hire. Furthermore, there’s no ‘roughing it’ involved – their facilities include recently refurbished changing rooms, secure lockers and hot showers.
With all the attention on the surf, the pretty harbour is sometimes overlooked. Many pretty fishing boats are moored here when they’re not out to sea. In the summer months it’s often possible to embark on a half-day sea safari, which is well worth the effort. The dramatic cliffs, golden sands and secret coves have never looked as good as they do from the sea! Furthermore, many of the guides will be happy to help you try your hand at catching a mackerel or two.
For less lovely days, there’s still tonnes to do and see. Our favourite local attractions include The Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay Zoo, Lappa Valley Steam Railway, The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre and Holywell Bay Golf Course. For a more restful and reflective day, the Japanese Garden and Bonsai Garden at St Mawgan or Trerice House and Gardens are beautiful.
Although this gives you a taste of some of the things to see and do around The Esplanade Hotel, you can take a look at our holiday club information and attractions pages for more suggestions or just ask a member of staff who are always on-hand to help.
